Dear Resident of Lompoc: With Election Day less than a month away, I wanted to take a moment to let you know why I have decided to run for a seat on the Lompoc City Council. Let me assure you, the decision was not made lightly, recognizing the significant expenditure of time if I am elected. However, as Penny, my wife, and I discussed it we became convinced it was the right thing to do. Hannah, our fifteen month old daughter was at first the most convincing reason not to run, but ultimately became the primary reason to run. You see, while I don't want to be away from Hannah anymore than absolutely necessary, I am concerned that without new, innovative leadership on the City Council, our quality of life will degrade. In fact, I believe that we can achieve a higher quality of life by following my four-point "PLAN". To make it easy to remember the four points, I have developed the acronym PLAN described below. PARKS AND RECREATION - I understand the value of quality athletic fields and facilities, and programs for our youth and will work to enhance our community's quality of life through better recreational facilities and broader opportunities. I have obtained a three- page document that lists dozens of agencies that may be willing to contribute funds for the construction of a multiple pool aquatic center in Lompoc to replace our swimming pool with a warmer pool for seniors and a cooler lap pool. LAW ENFORCEMENT - I have been successful in claiming more than $13 million in grants for Lompoc. I will use this experience to assist City staff to find and secure grant funding for additional police officers to increase public safety throughout our community. These grants will be in addition to the conventional police grants obtained by our Police Department. The funds I am talking about are broad enough to hire full time Police Officers with full benefits for an indefinite time period. An example of this type of grant is one the City receives already on an annual basis but has not fully utilized. The Federal transit Administration (FTA) provides Lompoc with several hundred thousand dollars each year for the operation of the Transit System. A portion of these funds is meant to be used to provide security for the System. I have spoken to officials at the FTA who have told me we can use this money to hire a full-time police officer with full benefits indefinitely. I am convinced there are other funding sources like this one available. I will provide the leadership to direct City staff to find them. AGRICULTURE - I believe support of farming is vital to our community. Farming is a significant element of our economy, culture and heritage. We need to take every opportunity and every forum to champion this industry in ways compatible with healthy living. NEW, HIGHER PAYING JOBS - I am committed to a pro-business environment, to attract clean industry to Lompoc. Through my efforts, six businesses have relocated or developed in Lompoc. I believe with the resources of the City behind me I can help attract more. We need to reach out to low-polluting high paying employers and invite them to share our high quality of life. Quality employers mean quality jobs. I have the energy, experience, and commitment to guide the future of Lompoc toward a better quality of life.
