Letter of Appreciation: Karen Frankenberger's Warmth & Genuine Manner Made an Everlasting Impression
In the summer of 1977 or 1978, a friend and I, both from Montreal, Canada, hitch-hiked across the U.S. At this particular point in our trip, we'd left California and were hitch-hiking through Nevada. I hope my recollection is accurate... after all, it's been 25 years.

A woman picked us up somewhere in what seemed like a desert. I think we were by a truckstop. We'd slept on the owners' front lawn and he woke us up bright and early with his garden hose! She drove us into Las Vegas, where she took us to a Burger King and (I think!) she bought us lunch. All we knew of Burger King was what we'd seen on cable TV since they didn't exist in Canada at the time. We had asked all the girls behind the counter to sing the Burger King song for us and they kindly obliged.

This woman then took us to the Dunes Casino. We were awestruck! We'd never seen a casino except in a James Bond movie!! We gambled and won a small amount of money. I remember her telling us that at night, you could see the Las Vegas lights for 30 miles. We then resumed our trip.

Somewhere down the road this woman took us into a town where she purchased cardboard ands markers for us so we could make signs indicating our destination to hold up as we hitch-hiked. During our trip, we met many, many wonderful people, and Karen ranks at the very top of the list.

I was 19 then and I'm 44 now and, as you can see, I remember her to this day. Her name is Karen Frankenberger. She told us she was from Lompoc, in California. For some reason, the name of the city always stuck in my mind. She talked lovingly of her daughter Gina. At that time, she was seeing a man whose first name was Julius and he was, I believe, a lawyer, but, if memory serves correctly, not from Lompoc. These are the only details I remember but her warmth and genuine manner made an everlasting impression.

The other day, I received an advertisement in my E-mail. It was a "People Locator". On a lark, I entered Karens' name and approximate age (hope I didn't offend, Karen!!) but purposely left the city name blank. Karens' name came up in Lompoc, Ca. That's when I decided to follow up and hence found your site.

If this does reach you, Karen, I just want to say a heartfelt thanks. I want you to know that I will always remember your kindness. I often thought of you and wondered if you remember us. My name is Paul and my friends' name is Kevin. If you've ever wondered what became of us, well... we turned out OK!!!
I'd love to hear from you. Please E-mail me at shodan0@shaw.ca. It would please me to no end to hear from you. -- Paul

A Letter from Lynda Hoffman
Hello class of '72! I watched my classmates graduate from the bleachers. I married Dennis Grimes when I was 16 and he was 17. It sounded like something smart to do at the time. That little baby that sat on my lap during the ceremony turned 30 yrs old this last march. Good Lord...where did all those years go?

My best friend during some of those years was Susan Norden. She moved away and died of bone cancer at the age of 17. About 10 years ago I decided to look up a few others that I had some fun with and felt connected to. One was Michele Dugre. She too had died young from cancer. With a broken heart I stopped looking for others.

Quite by accident I came across the Lompoc Online site and felt like I had run into a long lost friend. My Dad moved us there in 1963 as he started working for the Federal Corrections Institution there. His name was Earl Brown McCarty Jr. and he passed away just a few months ago. (cancer) My mother worked at Lockheed for years (Audrey McCarty) and is a cancer surviver.

Anyway I'd like to find Sharlene Morrison (Cabrillo High 1971 or 1972). Jeanie Day, Nina Smith, Chris Fryatt or anyone that remembers me. A Lompoc memory for me was going to see " Night of the Living Dead" with Susan Norden and then going to the graveyard up by her house at night. We know we saw zombies! We would run screaming out of the cemetary and then laugh for days. Also I was wondering if anyone would know about my 6th grade teacher (Mr. Clease). It would have been his first year of teaching at our elementary in 1966.

Bubba Baker's Friends Found Online! Hi again! My name is Bubba Baker. A while back I posted a message to your Lompoc Online site regarding my search for some "dear old friends" whom I had lost track of back in 1974. Believe it or not, I have found them ! An anonymous email from one of your readers suggested a website to try searching and sure enough, it paid off ! I thought I had tried all of the "people find" search sites but as it turns out, persistence is the key. I had tried the Yahoo People search many times over the past several years, but a few weeks ago, I tried again and BINGO !

Thanks again very much for leaving my message on your site for as long as you did ! I'm convinced that I wouldn't have found them without your generosity and the help of your readers.

NOTE: I'm glad that Lompoc Online played a part in helping you find your friends. Thanks for letting us know of your positive results :-) Click here, then scroll down a bit, to see Bubba's original letter.
    Cabrillo High School 10 Year
Reunion Update from Heidi Gregorini

Dear Lompoc Online:
I am so happy that I came across your website. I am a graduate of Cabrillo High School. I graduated from CHS in 1991. We are planning our 10 year reunion to take place in Lompoc. Our reunion is set for Sept. 21-23, 2001. We are still trying to locate so many alumni. Please post our reunion on your website . I have attached all the information regarding our reunion including our most recent 'Missing in Action' list of alumni and teachers. Your website is great!! Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or comments. My work number and information are enclosed for your convenience.

Our agenda is as follows: Sept. 21, 2001: a bus will take us for a drive to CHS, dinner in Buellton, and then to the CHS football game. We will then go out somewhere afterwards to catch up.

Sept. 22, 2001: the afternoon is free for alumni to plan their activities. There will be tours set up at local wineries and great golf rates at la Purisima. The evening activities are: 6:00-7:00 pm "cocktail hour/ice breaker", 7:00-8:00 pm- dinner, 8:00-1:00 am dancing. The reunion will be held at the Lompoc Elks Lodge.

Sept. 23, 2001: there will be a brunch from 10:00-11:00 am and a BBQ picnic from 11:00-1:00 pm. This will be at Beattie Park in Lompoc.

We do have special rates at local hotels. The cost is $50.00 per person and includes the activities Sat. evening and Sun. afternoon. The game and dinner on Friday are at the Alumni's expense. I really look forward to hearing from you. Thank you again for your time and help. Is it possible for you to publish our MIA list for your viewers to see? Thank you again!

Gene Maggard says "Hello"
Gene Maggard writes,
I just discovered you website, and was very pleased to read about my old alma mater. My family moved to Lompoc in 1961 and I graduated from LHS in 1967. I moved to Santa Maria for a year, then joined the Air Force for four years, returning to live in the Ventura-Oxnard area, From there I moved to Los Angeles, and about eight years ago I picked up everything and trudged across the country to make a home in Marietta, Georgia. (I thought it was ironic, since my mother had worked for Martin-Marietta for several years at Vandenberg!) I've been married for 20 years, and have two children from a first marriage that are now 31 and 26.

Unfortunately, I've never been in a place where I could attend a reunion before, and wonder if anyone is still around from that year. Is there any future reunion planned?

By the way, my mother, Shirley, also worked at the Lompoc school district, heading up the printing department under Alice Milligan. I was quite surprised to see her name and her current position as President. My mom is living in the Sacramento area (she's now 76).

I currently work in the catalog publishing industry for a company based in Chicago. I mostly travel (3-4 days a week) throughout the U.S. and Europe. I always had a hard time sitting at a desk, so the job sets well with me, and my wife, Esther, can travel with me whenever it gets too obtrusive.

Anyway, if there's anyone still around, feel free to write and tell me about yourselves.

A Big Hello
to Lompoc from Bob Atkinson

Hello, My name is Bob Atkinson, (Robert Edward), my fathers name was Charles Robert Edward Atkinson & used to work for the Federal Correction Institute in Vandenburg, I think that's right as my memory after a very bad road accident isn't very good !!!

Anyway, My mother & father were both born here in England, my Father in Woolpit, Suffolk & my Mother in Godalming in Surrey, where my father was working for Hawker's (Hawker Hurricane WW 2 fighters were built ! ) teaching different Aircraft Scillies, he left England & moved to Canada were he bought a Tiger Moth by-plane aircraft ! my mother & father (cutting a VERY long story FAIRLY, short !!! ) wanted to move back to England & find their dream home. My Father moved from Canada to the U.S.A, we lived in Fort Worth Texas were I was born (in October 1961) from there we eventually moved to Lompoc California where my sister Sally was born in Lompoc hospital.

My Father moved to Saudi Arabia working for about 11 years for Northrop Aircraft teaching, or trying to teach the Arabs the Northrop F- 5 Freedom Fighter, a great jet fighter in its days ! Unfortunately he died over there just about 2 years before he was due to retire ! we went out & stayed with him in Saudi for about two years & from there moved over here in England.

I wanted to go back to the U.S.A as I missed it so much ! so I sold my Jaguar XJ 6 (which was my fathers before he died) & everything I had to get the money together, I finally got to Lompoc & it was so very lovely to see the house we lived in, (282 Pegasus Ave.) and seeing my old school and the Lompoc shopping centre and so much more !!! IT WAS GREAT !!!

I met a wonderful girl, Brynda Athas, her Grandmother was seeing Joe Duke who also warked at Northrop Aircraft, but died also before he could re-tire back to England, anyway, Brynda & I were having a fantastic time & being back in Lompoc was so fantastic, a dream come true ! but I was getting short of money & missing my Mum, Betty Colleen Atkinson, & my sister, Sally Ann Atkinson, that I came back over to England.

I am still having problems to do with the car crash I had, the head injury has left me with a bad memory and partially sighted but my memories of my father & Lompoc will be with me always ! & hope to come & see Lompoc again some day ! just pray that it happens ! and I do pray that every night !

You are so very lucky to be there so have a great time for me! P.S My father also used to restore classic cars & won some shows, mainly his Packard classics he restored & actually owned !
Anyway there is so much I could say I would be doing this forever but just wanted to say a great BIG hello to you all in Lompoc & wish me some luck on getting out there soon to see you all again,
From Bob Atkinson.
P.S. Sorry about the spellun !!!!
PS -- it would be FANTASTIC to get some mail from California again ! just to say hi & tell me some news about Lompoc & keep in contact with me as it would bring Lompoc a bit closer to me.

Desperately Seeking Patricia Jane Bartell Carter
Diana writes,
I am desperately trying to locate Patricia Jane Bartell Carter born June 23, 1921. She was married to a Robert Carter who was an officer at the Vandenberg Air Force Base. Their children were Sandra and Robby Carter. I
have been told that Patricia was one of the leading base entertainers, a beautiful blonde that could sing like a canary.

It has just been a month now that the only Bartell family she has left found out about her existence. She is my cousin and the only other living Leonard Bartell descendent relative I have. I believe that Patricia is still alive and living in CA. I have searched multiple death indexes for a Patricia J. with her birth date and have come up with nothing.

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you can give me.

Sincerely,
Diana Wolfe

Cyndi Cornett Looks for Her Friend, Ispa Delongpre
Hi, I have been trying to reach a close friend of mine, Ispa Delongpre whom I suddenly lost contact with. She was residing in Santa Maria but I have had no luck finding her there so I thought I would try to reach her through her brother Charles, who lives in Lompoc and works at the Lompoc prison. It would mean a great deal to me if there is any way you can put me in contact with him or her.
Thank you,

Mary Novotny, Former USAF SSgt, Looking for Anyone Who Remembers Her

The last time I was in Lompoc/Vandenberg AFB was in 1981. At the time, I had a lovely visit with Ret. CMSgt Roy Stovall and his wife, Sylvia. I've lost touch with them and their family. During previous visits during the 1970's, I saw Lt. Col. Bishop, Lt. Detweiller, TSgt Morrison, and many others from Vandenberg AFB or Minot AFB. Some of them I knew from Offutt AFB.

Would welcome any contact from anyone during this timeframe. Lompoc is lovely. It would be wonderful to visit again. Hello to one and all.

- with very fond memories, Mary Novotny
(currently a VA Hospital employee in Milwaukee).
E-mail Mary Novotny.

Which School Did Brady Attend?
Hello, I lived in Lompoc as a little kid, during the early sixties. I am trying to track down the name of the elementary school I attended during 62, 63. Our house address was 3344 Via Dona, in Mission Hills, and I remember the school was at the base of a huge wooded hill. (At least it seemed huge to me.) The hill had a large concrete stairway going all the way to the top, for the use of the students--and we were always warned to "stick to the stairway", and not to go into the woods.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance. I can't seem to make heads or tails out of the Consolidated Schools web pages. Maybe it wasn't part of the consolidated district? Anyway, thanks again for any info you can turn up.
Brady McElligott --Edgewood, NM
