Here are the results of Lompoc Online's name change poll which posed the question: Should Lompoc change its name to La Purisima? No —
77% Below are some of the comments left (anonymously) by poll takers. The most recent are at the end of the list. 1. I think La Purisima would be a great name instead of Lompoc 2. I've yet to hear a good reason for changing Lompoc's name. Until someone offers a convincing argument that "Lompoc" has somehow and suddenly become inappropriate, it seems that that historical old name should be retained. 3. Leave Lompoc alone! Besides, just think of all the fun you will miss by not being able to assert your pedantic authority by informing all the tourists how to correctly pronounce the name of of our fair town. 4. We need no more foreign-sounding city names. We have too many already. I love Lompoc. 5. Any name sounds better than lompoc. 6. Definately NOT..........You don't change a town/city's name because some Hollywood mentality Yuppie thinks it doesnt sound Posh enough.....Lompoc has too much history!!! 7. no matter what the name is Lompoc or Lapurisima. Lompoc will always be Lompoc. When you have a name and then all of a sudden someone wants to change it to make it better there is something wrong with that cause Lompoc has always been wonderful. There is no place like Lompoc California. I know I was raised there so leave it alone. 8. No...but...####...No 9. You must be kidding me!!! Who put that one forward? 10. i was born in lompoc not la purisima 11. We already have enough crap named la purisima so lets be done with it? 12. I moved to Lompoc because it has such a wonderfully distinctive name....find another mission to go on 13. La Purisima has more historical significance. Besides, it sounds better. 14. Does any one of you that has bothered to complain about the issue of the name change, ever considered the meaning of the two cities names. Why dont you find out, and then make a decision based on that. Sometimes the new meaning will pull a new spirit to the town ?? To make a decision based on what it sounds like is crazy ?? 15. anything but lompoc 16. WHY WOULD ANYONE IN THERE RIGHT MIND WANT TO CHANGE LOMPOC????? 17. Lompoc, a Chumash word, is a name that's been around a long time before the Spanish came up with La Pursima. That's history. Keep Lompoc. 18. La Purisima Mission is an important part of the history of this region; however, I feel the presence of the Chumash and their culture met their demise more quickly because of it. Lompoc, no matter how you pronounce it, (and POC sounds more Indian than POKE) should stay as a reminder of that culture. I transplanted to this town, but I love it. 19. I think you should name is MooseVille california or how about Cheyenne, California since Cheyenne wyoming is a sister city to lompoc california 20. To be historically accurate, the name would have to be changed to La Purisima Concepcion de Maria Santisima! No thanks! 21. Obviously, those who think La Purisima has more history, haven't studied local history. 22. I had a hard enough time learning to say it right... 23.How about "That funny sounding town with the beautiful flowers"....Like Gloryville 24. What makes Lompoc the BEAUTIFUL place that it is is that it's LOMPOC 25. No Lompoc should not change it's name to La Purisma.....for the simple fact Lompoc is known for it's name and it's roots.....it's not just a town it's a haven and you go and change a name like that, that's been around as long as Lompoc has you're just fixing something that isn't broken...Lompoc is just fine the way it IS. Thank You for asking. 26. My Great great grandfather was the first acting mayor of Lompoc and would certainly oppose a name change! 27. People would think La Plurisima is maybe Spanish for Pleurisy. 28. LOMPOC, WHAT A SPECIAL NAME. WHY FIX IT WHEN IT AIN'T BROKEN. 29. No way,It should stay how its always been. Lompoc is a proud Chumash name and should be its name forever. 30. hey, guys, haven't you ever heard of "Lompton", we've got a bad name....kinda like "Ventura"....come-on, folks, push the boundary, go for it! 31. hey, guys, haven't you ever heard of "Lompton", we've got a bad name....kinda like "Ventura"....come-on, folks, push the boundary, go for it! 32. why change such a fun name...i've never been able to correct so many people! 33. Lompoc is such an original name -- once you've been there you don't forget it! 34. If ever a name fit a place, it's Lompoc. The town deserves a lame name. 35. i dont know why you would want to change the name of the most unique place on earth. obviously the person who suggested the name change needs to move somewhere else to try and change the name. i dont know of one lompoc native that would even think to change the name. i know i wouldnt. 36. How about calling it CHEYENNE SINCE WE ARE CHEYENE,WYOMING'S sister city. 37. It is easy to say LOMPOC - or the POKE. It is great leave it alone. 38. why change your name vhen pepol now what it is now.... maria denmark 39. Keep the name. Its anagram (COOL PM)is a tribute to our pleasant evenings here. 40. I read where Lompoc actually means a place where the water is stagnant..make up your own mind 41. i comment is the change to the name to lompoc valley 42. NO CHANGES!!!!!!!!!! "LOMPOC" -IT HAS BEEN, WILL BE, AND WILL STAY THAT WAY! 43. The Chumash were in the valley before the missionaries. Call it what you want, but I am from LOMPOC! 44. Why change...we will get bombarded by more cars and houses ...besides why blur the special name of the Mission...Lompoc is not a joke 45. changing names can sometimes lead others to believe you are ashamed of the past....... leave it alone 46. I am not "ashamed" of our name "Lompoc". Its an "ok" name. Nevertheless I vote to change it to La Purisima, which is a beautiful name for a beautiful place to live. A name change won't change the past.. we own our memories. 47. The Mission has its own identity as does Lompoc. Why fix it if its not broken??? 48. This land was the home of the Chumash, not the Spanish. 49. WHY?? WHO?? This idea must have originated from a "newcomer" who has formed no ties to Lompoc!! It would never be considered an option by anyone with a legitimate Lompoc history. La Purisima Mission has it's own separate identity and thus it should stay.... 50. There's enough Spanish-named cities and places in California already. 51. Keep it! Lompoc's anagram ("COOL PM") is a beautiful way to express our long summertime evenings -- lucky we are to live here! 52. Oh come on!!!! there is no cool way to mispronounce La Purisima... Lompock rules!!! 53. Some of my best memories are from when I lived in Lompoc from '84 to '86. When I told people I lived in Lompoc it always started an interesting conversation. Please leave the name alone for those of us who will always remember Lompoc fondly. 54. why don't we call all these people that made these lame comments about Lompoc, "Loco In The Cavasa" Just Keep the name Lompoc...I don't think W.C. Fields would be very happy knowing you changed the name...He may roll over in anger in his grave...Who in the heck put MooseVille...Cheyenne, is a nice name, but look, we already have a state with a town with that name, so let's allow them to keep their home town name and we will keep our orginal name...LOMPOC.... 55. HELL NO! 56. I've heard Lompoc mentioned on national radio, in W.C.Fields movies. Who would recognize La Purisima?? Don't change the name of a famous place. 57. BE proud of who we are Leave LOMPOC's name alone. 58. Stupid idea! Why fix something that is not broke? 59. don't change history 60. My parents were born in LOMPOC, I was born in LOMPOC, my child was born in LOMPOC, need I say more? 61. that's the best 62. We live in Lompoc for a short time (1983-1986) and wish we still could. we wtill have several friends that still live there, But the name has to stay the same. 63. MY NAME IS VERONICA BROWN AND I LIVED IN LOMPOC MOST MY LIFE UNTIL RECENTLY AND DONT THINK THEY SHOULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT LOMPOC 64. Are you kidding!? Why change Lompoc's name? My mother lived here when she was a teenager & it just wouldn't be right for her. 65. How would W.C. Field feel if he was alive today about Lompoc being changed to the name of La purisma? I think you all need to keep the name Lompoc or you can change it to W.C. Fields...Doesn't anyone remember how W.C. Fields movies were shot her in Old Lompoc? 66. My children were born in LOMPOC,California not La Purisma . My boys are proud to say there were born here. 67. THINK, PEOPLE !! If you're gonna change the name of the city, at least for once in history of the town change the name to something that any idiot can pronounce... The name "La Purisima" would be mangled even worse than "Lompoc" has been mangled! 68. If the name were changed, I'd never be able to find my boyhood home. This is a stupid idea, probably originated by someone hoping to land a huge contract to supply the city with new stationary. 69. Write the city and ask for change at http://www.ci.lompoc.ca.us/
