Changes in Lompoc
by Blaine Miller
Hey, all... It's me again. I've been following some of the discussion(s) about the
goings on in Lompoc. One of my first jobs as a youth was delivering the
paper door to door in Lompoc. I saw several "first run" movies at the
drive-in. I was among the first of the "putters" at the (then new Mini
Golf course! Now a yard goods lot!
So many changes. It's like someone said the other day, change is
inevitable, progress is optional! So whether it's the Prison expansion,
outrageous gasoline prices, bridges to nowhere, or snowy plover
endangerment... "something" will happen... or not.
The thing that most attracts me to Lompoc is it's diversity while
maintaining some level of insulation from the negative effects of rapid
expansion for economic reasons only. I was a student down at UC Irvine
when that "ecologically" planned community was envisioned. That planning
lost out to interests decapitating whole hilltops for tract homes,
invasions of yupsters in Beamers, and the eventual bankruptcy of an
entire County.
I'm headed south again (to go camping) this weekend. Now that the summer crowds have
left. I too am looking forward to enjoying that quiet diversity that is
Lompoc. And if I should be fortunate enough to someday make it a
permanent move, I know that I too would be striving to somehow balance
Lompocs' need to grow, to make progress, with the mutual goal of a
quality of life that is unsurpassed.
See you around!
-- Blaine

Season tickets for Cabrillo home football games are now available. The team's going to be really good this year, with a lot of new talent and a new coach. We have 4 home games at the cost of

Cabrillo T-shirt. For $100, you get admission, the parking, seating and a medium-weight "Vegas Gold" Cabrillo jacket. Tickets are available at the school athletic office or from me!
