Thank You
My husband, Bill and I want to thank our friends in the Lompoc/Vandenberg area for their concern and prayers during the recent events at the Pentagon.

Bill was transferred to the Pentagon in July of this year after being stationed at Vandenberg for three years. He was working in his office, in another area of the building, when the plane crashed into it. Thankfully, all those in his office were able to evacuate the building safely.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of this horrible crime.

Point Honda Disaster
Gordon Smith of Penarth, Wales, UK writes to us about the disastrous accidental grounding of seven naval destroyers at Point Honda (near Lompoc) on September 8, 1923:

"I run www.naval-history.net, and my grandfather served in the Royal Navy and was decorated in World War1."

"In 1923, he was in one the warships escorting the then Prince of Wales on a round-the-world tour in HMS Repulse (later lost off Malaya in December 1941). In one of his scrapbooks, which I have now added to my site, were seven photographs of the Point Honda disaster."

"Using these photographs as a starting point, I have put together a page which attempts to clarify how each ship went ashore and what happened to it and the crews. I hope you might find it of interest."
-- Thank you, Gordon, for putting together this informative website!

  Learn a Lot About Lompoc...
If you're reading this, you're a person who's interested in Lompoc. Would you like to to learn a lot more about your town and feel good because you're contributing to your community, too?

Dennis Headrick writes, "We (The Lompoc Historical Society -- see "Historical Society Open House", left column of this page) are in need of volunteers at the Fabing-McKay-Spanne House. Our workdays are Mondays and Thursdays from 9-11 a.m. We not only work on those days, but also conduct individual and group tours. Thursdays are usually 3rd grade tour days."

"Our volunteers do everything required to maintain the house and property. We'll find a suitable chore for everyone!"

"On the fourth Sunday of each month, we're open from 1-4 p.m. We also need volunteers to staff the rooms in the house and greet visitors, answer questions and interpret the artifcacts for visitors. We'll provide information to anyone interested. It's fun and educational."

Now you have to admit, this is a great opportunity! Email Dennis Headrick or Myra Manfrina or just show up and introduce yourself on the fourth Sunday of the month! (That's August 26th or September 23rd.)

(Look for him in the background of the set next time you watch Headline News.) Of his time here, Steve recalls, "A lot of people say about the South -- people are friendly, which is very true. But I found the same thing to be true in Lompoc. That was a good place to grow up."

If you ever considered a career in journalism, you'll enjoy his insights even more.

This 'n That, Column by Ron Fink

The Lompoc Railroad
Ron's latest article about the Lompoc Railroad is complete with historic photographs.

"The railroad came to Lompoc near the turn of the last century. Prior to the arrival of the iron horse real horses and wagons were used to bring freight and passengers into the newly established town of Lompoc. Before the arrival of the modern railroad it took many days and sometimes weeks before small increments of mail and valuable freight could reach our community."
