New!Walk Dog Offleash?
Chris writes,
hello,
i am new to the area, and wonder if there is anywhere in lompoc that i can have my dog offleash to play. I am aware of waller park's dog park, but wondering if there is anything closer.
thanks,
chris and dog 'jake'

EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year there was a push to create a dog park in Lompoc, but I haven't heard any more about that for some time. (If any readers know the status of the dog park effort, please let me know!) Dogs sometimes walk their people along the Santa Ynez -- you can get there by taking a path from the periphery of River Park. I hope some folks write in with more suggestions.

New!Find Fish Fossils
Rich writes,
I have been told that there are areas around Lompoc where it is pretty easy to find fish fossils in the rock (shale). Are you aware of any places in your area that are on public lands where it is ok to look for fossils. Or, is there a local rock collecting club that might know?
Thanks.

New!Senior Cyclist Ponders Lompoc
Ed writes,
I'm looking for a place like Lompoc to spend the rest of my senior years. I'm 72, retired, a Bicycle Rider (4000 + miles a year) and a part time Historian. How's the Senior Population in Lompoc?
I'm a native of CA. Been in MT for about 10 years and would like to return to CA--"If I can afford it?" Got any information I can use?
Ed Mason, pob 861 miles city, mt 59301

EDITOR'S NOTE: Bicycling four thousand plus miles a year! Ed, I'm very impressed! As you may know, Lompoc sits along California's Route 1, which attracts cycling enthusiasts by the droves. Check out the Lompoc Valley Bicycle Club website for ride schedules.

As far as the number of seniors in town, people age 65 and older comprise 8.6% of Lompoc's population (Source: Claritas, Inc.) (More demographic information can be found at The California Institute for Rural Health Management website.)

I hope you get some additional responses from our website visitors who can help you get a feel for "Lompoc Living".

New! This 'n That, Column by Ron Fink

Ron's latest article, Miguelito Meanderings (Installment One), has lots of historical reminiscences, including a story of the heroic efforts of Lompoc Fire Captain Roy Belluz and his crew. Here's an excerpt:

"My wife and I recently gassed up the family limo, packed a picnic lunch and headed south on "I" Street. We slowly traveled for about 8 miles down Miguelito Canyon Road to the Sudden Ranch Gate. It was a truly wonderful experience and while it was only 8 miles in distance it was 100 years in time."

New!Lompoc History/Genealogy Update
About a year and a half ago, Myra Manfrina of the Lompoc Valley Historical Society kindly offered to try to answer history and genealogical e-mails from Lompoc Online website visitors. Here's a brief update from her:

Myra writes,
Thank you so very much for keeping on with Lompoconline. I get about 5 queries a week - some for just an obit, some for a lengthy genealogy, some just general information. But it sure keeps me busy. There a whole lot out there who read Lompoconline!! And very much enjoy it.

Environmental Information Services News
Bill Swingle writes,
This is a fresh new newsletter from a local Lompoc group who call themselves the Environmental Information Services. My mom's a part of them and hosts the news letter. If you find something interesting I don't think they would mind you reprinting it. That is the purpose of the letter - to share information.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm happy to be able to make the Environmental Information Services Newsletter available online. There an interesting section about how local folks successfully, and non-toxically, dealt with an ant problem, several healthy recipes and more.
