Transferring to Lompoc...
Q.
Hi Don,
I will be transferring to Vandenberg Air Force Base from Brooks Air Force
Base in San Antonio Texas in the May-June timeframe. Is there a central
place to get information concerning apartment (rentals) in the area? What
churches are in the area or within driving distance? Where is the mall or
major shopping facilities? This information is not included in anything
provided at our installation. Hope you can help me. Looking forward to
becoming a resident.
Mary
Don answers,
A.
Mary,
You may wish to contact the Lompoc Chamber of Commerce, Lompoc Online and
Wiser Property Management and Sales These sites are all available on my web
page (http://dpdon.com/). Lompoc Online has much information about Lompoc. Wiser has
current rentals listed on their pages. The base will have a list of rentals.
Check with me for additional rentals when you arrive. The Chamber can send
you a package of information about the town..
Shopping is all over town with some major chain stores that you will like.
Churches? I think there is every Church that there is located in Lompoc. Yes
they are all within easy driving distance. Lompoc is a small town in a nice
valley, by itself, with Santa Barbara and Santa Maria less than an hours
drive away.
I just know you will like it here. Welcome. If you need more information do
not hesitate to ask.

Moving to Lompoc...
Q.
Hi Don! well, since reading Lompoc Online, i've bought a house (escrow should
close tomorrow) and am moving down from the SFBayArea.
coupla questions:
i joined the e-newsletter weeks ago, but never received one - any idea
why?
is there a BB where i can post questions for other visitors to see, or do
all queries go thru you? would love a place where i can freely
email/communicate with other Lompoc folks. perhaps such a place exists on
your site and i'm overlooking it..?
either way, my first question is: who can recommend a good
carpet/flooring place? shop or independent.
including my email link is fine.
Thanks for any help,
Karen
Don answers,
A.
Karen,
First it is great that you were able to purchase a place in Lompoc. Next, we
have several apartments and have found Olivera's to be very satisfactory for
flooring work. I do not have the address but this is not a real big town so
it will be easy to find. They are in the book.
When you get here you may wish to talk with Noreen at the Chamber of
Commerce. She is head of the local Rental Property Committee here in Lompoc
and can assist with names of contractors that you might need. Noreen is Mrs.
Pond by the way.
The Lompoc Online is not my page so I will forward your note about the
e-newsletter to Bonny. I do not think she has a bulletin board page and do I
know anyone that does. Perhaps Bonny might be able to post questions for
you. Don't hold your breath for answers from others though.
If you wish you can contact myself or Noreen for some answers when you
arrive in town. Noreen is full of information due to her activity with the
Chamber of Commerce and managing the rental property.
Welcome to Lompoc,
Don
EDITOR'S NOTE: Hi Karen, and welcome to Lompoc! To answer your question about the missing newsletter, the reason
you haven't received one is that I, unfortunately, haven't had time to write one lately. I've been late on quite a few
website related things recently. I've even been thinking about asking for volunteers to help keep the site up and running. (Any takers?)
As for the bulletin board question, folks can either post questions in the Guestbook (see orange column) or send them to me
directly. (Also see orange column.) If a question comes to me rather than to Don, I usu. post it on the "Lompoc Folks"
page and link to it from the "Also in This Issue" box.
(I've considered adding a real time chat room to the site, but then there's the possibility of inappropriate material being posted -- this
is the Internet after all.)
I beg to differ with Don about whether you would receive an answer. Lompoc Online seems to have some very loyal
readers, which is probably why the Alumni Association President, Alice Milligan, suggests that LHS alums use it to communicate with one another.
(They email the webmaster -- me -- I post their message, usually on the Lompoc Folks page with a link to their email address. Other readers then communicate
with them directly or email Lompoc Online for a general posting.)
Hope some of this helped! -- Bonny
ASK DON A QUESTION
(Would you like your email address posted with your answer so other readers can contact you, too?
Just mention "Email link is OK" when you ask Don your question.)

Beach Closed Due to Plover
Here's what Ocean Park/Surf Beach Commission member, Ron Fink, has to say:
Biological monitoring reports have established that the Western Snowy Plover population seems to ebb
and flow consistent with the seasonal weather patterns. For example, 115
nests were counted in 1989; 242 in 1991; 97 in 1993; 238 in 1997; 78 in
1999; and 106 in 2000. ...Two of the highest census counts occurred in 1991 and 1997 - after the endangered
status was claimed and long before any restrictions were enforced concerning
use of the beach.

Olde Towne Market, 2001
Alice Milligan writes:
Last year, for the first time, a small group of local volunteers put
together the Friday night Olde Towne Market. It operated from July
through October 2000. We offered entertainment, business booths and
food. It was very successful - residents looked forward to this event
every Friday night.
Plans are underway to repeat this activity this
year - we will begin earlier - May 4 and continue through October 2001.
Our planning committee meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at 1:30 PM
at the Lompoc Valley Chamber, 111 South I Street. Because we will be
operating the Olde Towne Market for a longer span of time, we need
volunteers. If you would like to help with the Olde Towne Market, we
would welcome you at any of our meetings.
Call the Chamber at 805-736-4567 and get on our mailing list or just show up at any of our
meetings. We had a lot of fun working this event last year. With more
volunteers, it would lessen the load on a few people. If you have any
questions or suggestions for the Olde Towne Market, please give me a
call at 736-4005. I would welcome your call.
