A Little North of Here,
But Maybe We Can Help...

Jinx Faulkner writes,
Hello, a few years ago I found a site on the web for a big old house that was at the north end (I think by 100 miles or so) of what had once been part of the hearst estate. It offered rooms for rent, however was still somehow part of a military base. I think the site said it used to be where Hearst flew his hollywood movie star friends for long weekends. All I remember is that the prices were reasonable, the place sounded remote and offbeat, you could still go watch a movie in a quonset hut, and you had to have i.d. to get on the military base....I think you basically drove south (south of monterey at least) and then took a left into the hills to get there...

I can't find anything like it on the web now. Maybe it's no longer operating, or maybe I'm just putting in the wrong search terms. Do you know what I'm talking about or have any suggestions where to look?
Thanks,
Jinx Faulkner

Historical Land Use for Fillmore Elementary School?
Rosalie Skefich writes,
I enjoy reading your Lompoc history columns online. Thought that you could assist with another Lompoc parcel land use project that I'm working on.

Goal is to identify the historical land use for what is now Fillmore Elementary School located at E. Pine Avenue at 4th and 5th Streets.

Talking with the historians I've learned the land was possibly owned by Schulyer or Balaam and had dry beans, sugar beets, hay, barley as possible crops.

Can you confirm ownership and how the land was used during 1930s - 1958 when the land was sold to the school district?

Thanks for any assistance.

Much Needed Blood Drive
a Great Success!

Dear Editor:
Elks' Lodge 2274, Lompoc, wishes to thank the 61 local citizens who answered the recent call for blood donors at our facility, as well as the media who advertised the event.

Tri-Counties Blood Bank, which conducted the drive, had stated that the area's blood supply was at a critically-low level, so all 61 - even the few who had to be turned down for various reasons - did the right thing in this time of need.

For everyone in the area who might wish to participate in our next drive, that date is Friday, April 12. Anyone who hasn't donated within 56 days of that date is eligible. The tentative hours are 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. with appointments strongly recommended.

Sincerely,
George Berard
Elks' Blood Drive Chairman

Environmental Information Services News
Bill Swingle writes,
This is a fresh new newsletter from a local Lompoc group who call themselves the Environmental Information Services. My mom's a part of them and hosts the news letter. If you find something interesting I don't think they would mind you reprinting it. That is the purpose of the letter - to share information.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm happy to be able to make the Environmental Information Services Newsletter available online. There an interesting section about how local folks successfully, and non-toxically, dealt with an ant problem, several healthy recipes and more.

Learn a Lot About Lompoc...
If you're reading this, you're a person who's interested in Lompoc. Would you like to to learn a lot more about your town and feel good because you're contributing to your community, too?

Dennis Headrick writes, "We (The Lompoc Historical Society -- see "Historical Society Open House", left column of this page) are in need of volunteers at the Fabing-McKay-Spanne House. Our workdays are Mondays and Thursdays from 9-11 a.m. We not only work on those days, but also conduct individual and group tours. Thursdays are usually 3rd grade tour days."

"Our volunteers do everything required to maintain the house and property. We'll find a suitable chore for everyone!"

"On the fourth Sunday of each month, we're open from 1-4 p.m. We also need volunteers to staff the rooms in the house and greet visitors, answer questions and interpret the artifcacts for visitors. We'll provide information to anyone interested. It's fun and educational."

Now you have to admit, this is a great opportunity! Email Dennis Headrick or Myra Manfrina or just show up and introduce yourself on the fourth Sunday of the month! (That's August 26th or September 23rd.)

This 'n That, Column by Ron Fink

The Lompoc Railroad
Ron's latest article about the Lompoc Railroad is complete with historic photographs.

"The railroad came to Lompoc near the turn of the last century. Prior to the arrival of the iron horse real horses and wagons were used to bring freight and passengers into the newly established town of Lompoc. Before the arrival of the modern railroad it took many days and sometimes weeks before small increments of mail and valuable freight could reach our community."
