Which Lompoc Athletes Won All-CIF Honors?

Bob Wiener writes:
As pleased as I am with your continued display of my letter, re: what to call residents of our fair city, I am writing now to suggest a new write-in campaign.

Even before that, however, I wish to point out that the only paper for which I now write is the Santa Maria Times. In it, I still have a column ("Road Games," every Tuesday) that discusses area athletes beyond high school, including the many from Lompoc who are playing college or professional sports.

Despite the expansion of the topics in my column, I retain a keen interest in Lompoc sports history. For example, I have always tried to get a handle on which Lompoc athletes were the first in their respective sports --- starting with football, basketball and baseball, but including all others --- to win All-CIF honors.

I have my own choices for the three so-called major sports, but I could be wrong in each case. Each of the athletes I can name is from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Does anyone out there have an earlier candidate?

Hopefully, anyone with such an answer would have some proof, like a CIF certificate, a newspaper clipping or a yearbook article. How about it?

Email your earliest All-CIF Honors picks and we'll post 'em here.

La Purisima Mission -- visit the mission or hike through the 100s of acres of open land.
Movies, movies, movies!

Olde Towne Market, 2001
Alice Milligan writes:
Last year, for the first time, a small group of local volunteers put together the Friday night Olde Towne Market. It operated from July through October 2000. We offered entertainment, business booths and food. It was very successful - residents looked forward to this event every Friday night.

Plans are underway to repeat this activity this year - we will begin earlier - May 4 and continue through October 2001. Our planning committee meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at 1:30 PM at the Lompoc Valley Chamber, 111 South I Street. Because we will be operating the Olde Towne Market for a longer span of time, we need volunteers. If you would like to help with the Olde Towne Market, we would welcome you at any of our meetings.

Call the Chamber at 805-736-4567 and get on our mailing list or just show up at any of our meetings. We had a lot of fun working this event last year. With more volunteers, it would lessen the load on a few people. If you have any questions or suggestions for the Olde Towne Market, please give me a call at 736-4005. I would welcome your call.

All 60s Reunion Dance
Q.
Don my name is Terry Sparks ('65) I live in AZ. If you have not heard, we are putting together an all 60s reunion that is to take place in Lompoc July, 2002 for four days. We could use some help finding a place to have the Dance. We are estimating approximately 2000 people plus, we would like to bring in some top bands from the 60s for the dance. As you know this would generate revenues for Lompoc food, lodging, etc. So if you could take a minute to think about it and see if maybe JM or one of the other big companies might have some ideas on a large building they might won't to donate or rent for this large occasion it wound be appreciated by the reunion committee. There will be an all 60s meeting on Feb.7, 2001 there in Lompoc.
Thank you very much for any help you can give us.
-- Terry Sparks ('65)

Don answers,
A.
I am forwarding this to the Chamber of Commerce. (If you know of a building for the dance, please email Terry.)
