MORE You Know You're a Lompoc Native When...

...you remember that day the wind stopped... and everybody fell over!

...as a young girl I remember getting to buy a goldfish at Woolworths with my dad and then sitting at the bar and having a banana split for a treat.

...as a young girl my mother worked at the Ben’s Snack Shop next door to the movie theater and I would go to the Kiddie Matinees there and then for a hamburger at Ben’s where they had the best hamburgers in town. Ben also used to run the only cab company in Lompoc.

...you worked at Sambo’s on the opening day which had a line all the way out to “H” Street.

You Know You're a Lompoc Native When...

...you remember when all the hippies in town worked at the carrot juice factory and they all turned orange from eating and drinking carrots!

...you remember when it was perfectly safe to walk ANYWHERE in town alone at 3am with no fear of harm from anything other than the occasional territorial dog!

...you remember when water balloon and egg battles in Ryon Park on the last day of school were the order of the day!

...you remember when downtown bars filled up with bikers and the street lined with Harley-Davidsons during early 70's Flower Festivals!

...you remember when Wolfman Jack could be heard blaring from every car radio cruising Ocean Ave. from D Street to Ryon Park on weekend nights.

...you remember when the remaining hippies that didn't work at the carrot juice factory worked at the leather goods factory on 2nd Street. They all had blue hands and forearms from the leather dye! (We had very colorful hippies in Lompoc in the early 70's!)

...you remember when you could get .10 cent chili dogs at the A&W on Tuesdays!

...you remember when EVERYTHING was covered in fine white dust from Grefco and JM.

...you remember when the world's best roast beef sandwiches were found at the "new" Liquor Emporium deli on E. Ocean Ave.

...you remember when you could buy cigarettes from the machine at the little gas station next to McDonalds for only .35 cents!

...you remember when "Yerky" the Helms Donuts man would extend credit for donuts and smokes to anyone who needed it.

...you remember when the "Lions Inn" was *THE* place to be at night.

...you remember when at Taco Bell you could get a "Bell Burger", a bean burrito and small coke and still get change back from a one dollar bill!

...you remember when boys with motorcycles would try to coast all the way in to town (without putting your feet down or starting your engine) from the VAFB gate with the ocean view near the end of Miguelito Rd.

One word: "Waldo" !

... you ever got stuck for a day or two with 20 other hitchhikers in the drizzling and cold Santa Barbara rain and you were just trying to hitchhike back into Lompoc!

... you ever went skinny-dipping at "Sulphur Springs"!

...you were ever suspended from Lompoc High for smoking cigarettes ...and then you were horrified to find out a few years later that they had instituted designated smoking areas ON CAMPUS! OH THE HUMANITY!

...you can remember the "Share A Ride" covered bench seat at "H" St. & Pine, long before there was any public bus system in town.

...you remember seeing Santa Clause come down in a helicopter at the shopping center, but then he landed on a station wagon because of a Lompoc gust!
