You Know You're a Lompoc Native When...
...your
hair stands up on your head at 12 noon every day, with that
'gentle breeze' coming in from the Surf!
Now
landlocked in a city, I miss that! I was a Lompocian (a temporary
resident maybe) from 1958 to 1964, not a native, but perhaps
a bit sad about that.

You
Know You're a Lompoc Native When...
...you hoed weeds
every year in your Dad's sweetpea and bachelor button field.
...you remember
the trees that used to be on Leggee and Floradale Avenues.
...you used to
go to the river and shoot bottles off the fence.
...you stuck flowers
on floats in the old high school ag building with roofing
tar.
...you remember
when the Sugar Beet Plant was on Union Sugar Avenue by the
railroad tracks.
...you climbed
the hill to put the "L" on behind Holloway's on
L Street.
...you went to
all of the Portuguese Celebrations at Miguelito Park... and
walked across the bridge... and listened to the older people
enjoying themselves.... and watched as VAFB people enjoyed
the food, Portuguese style.
...the Christmas
Parade was at night, with floats lit up, and it went by the
old library where the Historical Society is now located.
...you
remember when the bowling alley was on the corner of Locust
and South H Street. (I think it is Locust.)
...you
remember when
the bus depot was where "Jasper's" is and had a
wooden walkway... and at Christmas Santa Claus was in the
building next door.
...you remember when the old J.C. Penney's was on West
Ocean. The children's department upstairs and you loved to
watch as the money flew above the entire floor in its canister
to the bookkeeping department on the other side...
...you remember when Moore's Department Store had a grocery
store in it... and when I began work there at age 14, telling
Howard Moore he needed me to wrap gifts for Father's Day.
He hired me and I wrapped gifts, and stayed for another 4
years.
...you remember when A & B Market was located at
about where the Chatterbox was, and is now a Mexican restaurant.
...you remember when the A & B Market moved to the
corner of Ocean and L Street, and the Home Ec teacher, Mrs.
Canfield, had the class go shopping there
...you remember when the Helm's
Man came to the old High School on L Street during recess.
He had almost the best Cream Puffs.
...you remember when the very best Cream Puffs were at
Hall's Bakery on East Ocean Avenue.
